NEPA Pagan Pride Day Festival

This Saturday, 19 August 2023, from 10:00am to 4:30pm EST, I will be presenting at the very first annual Pagan Pride Day festival for the Wilkes-Barre, PA area! I am honored to support the Wyoming Valley CUUPS organization, and extremely excited to teach about City Magic!

Historically, “pagan” generally referred to people practicing the rural folk customs & rituals of agricultural traditions. In the 21st century, most neopagans do not live in either rural or agricultural environments– we live in cities. Most books, lectures, and training programs focus on nature religion as occurring “out there” in environments with limited human contact, and ignores the evolution of Spirits that coexist with humanity in the same urban environments in which we live. Join Rev Monika Kojote in a workshop about the magic of Cities, the evolution of Spirits, and ideas on how to begin relationships with these energies.

I’ve taught this workshop at Central New Jersey Pagan Pride, NYC Pagan Pride, DC Pagan Pride, and other heavily-populated urban environments. A born & raised New Yorker (Flushing gal forever), I created this workshop as a response to the inherent racist, classist, and anti-immigrant undertones to many pagan teachings.

Join me and other attendees to support the inaugural celebration of pagan religions in northeastern Pennsylvania!

“Core” shamanism, indigenous shamanism, and initiatory experiences in the States

(original interview from June 2017)

A few weeks ago, I was asked to respond to different questions surrounding a range of issues in Modern Shamanism today: the apparent dichotomy between “core shamanism” vs. traditional/indigenous shamanism, initiations from priests vs. initiations from Spirits, and how to find an effective Teacher.

I am asked these questions often by different students and clients, and I suspect that many others are as well. Working with the wonderful search engine of Google (sometimes laughingly called, “the new version of the Library of Alexandria“), I can find hundreds of articles about the above-mentioned debates, using both academic and experiential data to inform their theories.

Using my ongoing studies, as well as my seven years of public healing work, I have formed my own opinions as well! Here are some of the highlights from my interview with a new researcher:

Q: “Many scholars have distinguished between traditional shamanism and ‘core’ shamanism, the non-denominational practice started by Sandra Ingerman and Michael Harner. It’s my understanding that while shamans within some traditional cultures voluntarily choose the path, many are chosen by the gods/spirits, and begin their initiation with a “shamanic crisis” that involves seeing visions, hearing voices, having mood swings, and experiencing a lot of the same types of phenomenon our culture would label as mental illness. They are then approached by the elder shaman, usually a relative, and taught how to navigate and make sense of those intense experiences, and use their unique sensitivities to help others. On the contrary, those who practice core shamanism in our culture typically choose to do it voluntarily, without the type of intense and often terrifying initiation that you find in traditional shamanism (at least what I’ve seen). However, I do think there are people in our culture who are called to shamanism by the spirits, through the same type of initiation found in indigenous cultures. However, because we don’t recognize them as such, they are not taught how to use their gifts, and are instead often labelled as having a pathology. What are your thoughts?”

A: “There is a lot to unpack here! Academia presents “traditional” vs. “core” shamanism as a false dichotomy– each culture has its own initiation practices, and although the rituals may differ, it is always the Spirits that initiate a person. Currently, many different shamans from many different cultures are opening up their practices to the greater world, because there is such a need for healing. Core shamanism was created by Michael Harner back in the 1970’s as a result of his meta-analyses across continents. Many basic skills are the same, such as journeying via drum/rattle, working with Helping Spirits for knowledge, etc., but the Spirits know the difference between folks who voluntarily learn these skills to help out friends and family vs. folks who dedicate their lives to healing all who come to them. Core shamanism has taken off in the USA because of the trend away from seeking out spiritual guidance from priests, pastors, and other humans, and instead going directly to the Spirits themselves. That doesn’t mean that it’s not valid, but it does need the framework of a religion in order to conceptualize the information.

With regards to the symptomology you described, you may want to check out Lukoff’s work on Visionary Spiritual Experiences. Shamanic crisis is the death of one’s old life, and while it may be a physical near death experience, it can also be the death of the personality structure, etc. There is a significant difference between that type of initiation crisis vs. mental illness, and most of the time, especially in America, it is truly mental illness. Most biological/genetic mental illnesses start around second puberty, 20-26 years old, and personality disorders (as a form of mental illness) are shaped from a person’s experiences since childhood to their current age. There are very few truly “indigenous” cultures left in the world, sadly. Within those smaller populations, the need for shamans would start the Crisis much earlier in life (when it was difficult to judge whether or not it was mental illness), because there may have only been one in a community, or one may be near death, etc.  In America, many shamans are called to work in their late 40’s and 50’s, when there is a drastic life change, or retirement, or the kids have left the house, etc. In that way, the shaman can be born from the “death” of that old life, that old role.  Of course, there are always exceptions to these generalities, but much has changed in the world since Michael and Sandy wrote their books 30-50 years ago!”

Q: “Do you think someone who practices core shamanism and has not had an initiatory crisis could be a suitable mentor for someone called to shamanism by the spirits who has experienced intense visions and altered states (while not in journey)? Or do you think that the best mentor would be someone who also has these experiences and can teach them how to process, understand, and cope with them?”

A: “Just because someone started learning within ‘core’ teachings doesn’t mean that they have not had an initiatory crisis! However, asking a potential mentor such a personal question would most likely be crossing a boundary, as these things are incredibly private. In all honesty, I would evaluate someone the same way one does a doctor, therapist, etc.  What education do they have? How many years experience working with the public? Do they offer any lectures or trainings, to get a sense of their teaching methods?  Essentially, “shaman” is the job title, and each shaman works within different religious frameworks, so evaluating folks until you find one that ‘fits’ is a good thing!  The Spirits will give guidance through Divine Inspiration, but they can only use the information & concepts within someone’s mind (i.e., life experiences, book learning, etc.). So if you are speaking with a mentor that perceives the Worlds via engineering concepts & systems, and you communicate your ideas within the framework of the human condition/archetypes, then that may not be the best fit long-term, but you’ll definitely learn something!”

Well wonderful readers, what are your thoughts to these highly-debated concepts in “Modern” Shamanism? Since this interview was completed over 6.5 years ago, I’ve actually adjusted my own personal ideas regarding these topics… stay tuned for an “updated” interview next month!

Master teacher plant: Cannabis

from Wikicommons, public domain*

On July 1st, 2023, the State of Maryland legalized cannabis for not only greater medical use, but personal recreational use. Our governor also enacted REDEEM 2023, which helps to expunge criminal records for past cannabis drug offenses (https://www.peoples-law.org/recreational-marijuana… )

Cannabis, within some shamanic cultures around the world, is worked with as a “Master Teacher Plant” for healing, connection with the Otherworlds, peaceful communication, and the careful resetting of the Fight/Freeze/Flight C-PTSD trauma cycle within human nervous systems.

However, the capitalization and commodification of this healing plant has destroyed aspects of the healing relationship between the Plant World and the Human World. Synthetic THC & cannabinoids, the ignoring of the drug abuse/dependence cycle, and the dissociation from shared reality– all of these harmful aspects occur when a person is not in “Right Relationship” with Mother Cannabis.

Join Rev. Monika Kojote at 5:30pm EST on 23rd July 2023 in a short lecture regarding the spiritual aspects of cannabis, the continued potential for abuse/dependency, the loss of integrative & synergistic healing through capitalism and chemistry, and problem-solving techniques for connecting with this Master Plant through personal healing methods. A ritual of honoring and connection will follow this lecture, to assist in the connection of the Mother Cannabis plant to human participants.

NOTE: This workshop is both for those that ingest/inhale this sacred plant, and those that work with it in the Otherworlds ONLY!

Payment of $25 (scroll down to “All Level Shamanic Journey Class”https://kojoteandkroh.com/online-payment/ ) guarantees attendance at the LIVE lecture & ritual, as well as a copy of the recording for your own healing work.

Rev. Monika Kojote has over 20+ years experience as a Master’s level substance abuse psychologist, as well as over 13+ years as a Druid Shaman. This workshops combines both of her educations for the benefit of the Community!

Happy Summer blessings to you all!

Hello wonderful readers– I am excited to share with you the workshops and events for July, huzzah!

(c) 2023, Rev. Monika Kojote at Frederick PRIDE

Over the past few months, I have had an incredible amount of life changes, both personal- and business-related. My new ceremonial temple in Hagerstown has become a beacon of healing support in a very difficult area of Washington County. I’ve kept Kojote & Kroh Shamanism strong for over a decade, in various locations such as Flushing, NYBaltimore MD, Columbia, MD, Silver Spring, MD, Rohersville, MD, and now Hagerstown. Each environment has taught me new philosophies about City Magic, and stretched my endurance in complex ways as I try to maintain a healing presence throughout the areas.

Another way that I am adapting to inflation and post-Pandemic concerns (besides driving a school bus, yes!), is offering reduced-cost healing ceremonies, divination, and other services through my Patreon account. Shorter, more targeted healing ceremonies are offered at only $45/month, and supporters have discovered the buildable healing effects that ongoing shamanic work can have over a long period of time!

My YouTube channel is slowly being updated, and I have started to add video recordings of previous years’ workshops. These are currently “Unlisted” (not Public), so that I can maintain some small control over distribution, as many topics need additional live instruction to bridge gaps in spiritual education. However, as a loving gift to all of you subscribers, here’s the link to my workshop on Purification & Shielding Techniques— thank you for supporting me!

Finally, I began filming short 2-minute videos that share general lessons of healing and connection on my TikTok account– please follow me there and share in the adventures!

Blessings,
Monika Kojote

Medusa’s shamanic work-group (hybrid)

(c) Rev Monika Kojote, 2023

It’s back! Our healing-support working group for the American public, lands, and climate has returned!

Most of of us who have trained in spiritual healing techniques, psychopomp work, Soul Retrieval, lead healing, and other forms of group healing are being asked to step up and HELP our Gods and to help the Earth Mother. Those of us who have Answered the Call have been working together for almost 4 full years. Now we need YOU to join us!

We will meet together, both in-person (Hagerstown) and over Zoom, on Sunday 9th July 2023, between 11am EST to 2pm EST. Together, we’ll Journey to our Helping Spirits to hear Their words, and to creatively work together to forge strong bonds of power and healing. We will also problem-solve ideas for preparing for continual, unexpected change, knowing that together we will ENDURE.

This working group is open to the public, but you must contact the facilitator, Rev. Monika Kojote, to ensure that you meet the pre-requisites (this is NOT a beginner’s group). The donation/cost of the working group is $15, payable via cash, check, Venmo, and/or PayPal

PREREQUISITES: In order to be effectively prepared for this type of work, attendees must have at least a few months of Journey work/active meditation experience as well as a strong relationship with at least one Helping Spirit. Clairvoyance (i.e., psychic visualization skills) is not needed as the primary form of communication within the Otherworlds, but students should feel somewhat confident in their ability to discern the difference between Ego Projection and Divine Inspiration.

Summer Solstice ritual

(c) 2023, Rev Monika Kojote

Happy Solstice blessings to you all! We gathered in online community last week, and celebrated the Plant Kingdoms during ritual.

Join me and the Spirits in a ritual of healing, empowerment, and celebration, no matter what time you are able to view this video!

Aaaaaoooooooo,

Rev. Monika Kojote

Medusa Labyrinth of Statues Ritual (online)

This gorgeous statue was fashioned in Jade by Damien Hirst!

Rev. Monika Kojote will lead a Druid-style ritual to communicate with Medusa for personal healing and soul retrieval. This ceremony will include a guided pathworking for paid attendees in order to facilitate the collective understanding of personal wounds from broken patriarchal structures, victimization from our government, and soul loss as a result of compassion fatigue/secondary trauma. A synopsis of the ritual will be given as part of the pre-ritual briefing, as well as an explanation of Medusa’s role as Guardian of the Labyrinth of Statues.

All paid attendees will receive a recording of the pathworking & ritual, for future spiritual work on their own (via Zoom link).

A donation of at least $10 is greatly encouraged to support this work, and I accept both PayPal and Venmo ( @MonikaCoyote ).

(This ritual has been performed at both the most recent Sacred Space/Between the Worlds Conference (April 2023) and Frederick Pagan Pride Day (Sept 2022)).

Presenting at the Sacred Space Conference

Huzzah, after over 3 years of waiting, it’s here! The Sacred Space/Between the Worlds spirituality conference is this weekend!

I am presenting both a lecture and a ritual in honor of the divine Medusa: her evolution as a goddess, her role in healing both personal & societal Soul Loss, and her embodiment as the sacred antithesis of American patriarchal culture.

I’m excited to spend time within magical community once more, and I hope to see you there!

Spring Equinox Druid Ritual

from Wikicommons, public license

Happy Alban Eilir, fellow Druids, pagans, spiritual seekers, and celebrants! Let us gather together in online community to celebrate one of the great equalizers of both time and space–the Equinox! This ritual will take place at 5:00pm EST, on Sunday 19 March 2023.

In my ~22 years as a Druid, I have often honored the beloved Celtic ocean trickster deity, Mannanan Mac Lir, on this holiday. Living along the East Coast of the States has made it easy to connect to the Atlantic both spirituality and within the physical world. Recently, we experienced the planet Saturn moving into Pisces, which adds to the churning waters of change!

For both new and ongoing attendees, please make note of the link posted here: I STRONGLY encourage you to become a Patreon member in order to gather together in sacred community for this rite. Both Facebook and YouTube have caused numerous issues during the last 3 livestreams, and so I will be using a dedicated link for members only.

And if you find that you’d prefer to do only a single donation for this ritual (and not a monthly Patreon subscription), please use the link here. Your donation of at least $15 will allow me to forward the LIVE details to you inbox.

See you soon, aaaaaooooooo!

Transitions during the Year of the Chariot 2023

Brownie the Boar & Rev Monika Kojote, 2023

Hello wonderful readers, and welcome to my final newsletter from the mountainside at Kõrgemäe Farm. Sadly, my time of homesteading, farm living, and animal husbandry is drawing to a close. I have deeply treasured the magical lessons from the Kune Kune pigsScottish Highland Cows, the local coyote pack, the neighborhood dog kennel, and the nine farm cats that have roamed the porches!

Concord & Rev Monika Kojote, 2023

After my pilgrimage to Nepal (Sept-October 2022), I began rather intensive training on land healing, mountain magics, advanced weather workings, and furthered my studies working with phurbas for human healing/psychopomp/deposession work. I received different perspectives on indigenous forms of Soul Retrieval, which has helped to decolonize the teachings I learned during my own shamanic training (2010-2012).

Nagarkot village, Nepal, Rev Monika Kojote, 2022

In March, I will be moving deeper into Washington County, to continue my studies of mountain healing magics, and to work with the Appalachian ranges specifically. I am also moving to an area that makes it much easier to facilitate in-person shamanic workshops (but I will still be teaching monthly Zoom lectures, stay tuned for those!).

Finally, I began filming short 2-minute videos that share general lessons of healing and connection on my TikTok account– please follow me there and share in the adventures!

Blessings,
Monika Kojote
